Lip inflation in Phuket

On a billboard near where we’re staying in Phuket Town, Thailand ti says:-"MAKE LIPS NATURAL AGAIN!" - a funny poke or perhaps a plea from someone who’s wary of overinflation? It doesn't matter whether it’s satire or sincere activism for the return of natural beauty, one thing is certain—Phuket’s lip inflation economy isn’t deflating anytime soon.
Phuket isn’t just a tropical paradise—it’s also a hotspot for medical tourism, with Thailand’s aesthetic medicine market projected to reach $7.51 billion by 2027, tripling in size from 2020. Among the most popular procedures? Lip augmentation. With an estimated 87,366 non-invasive procedures in Thailand by 2024, it’s no surprise that exaggerated, plump lips have become almost as common as beach selfies here.
Tourists—particularly from Eastern Europe, Russia, and China—flock to Phuket’s aesthetic clinics, drawn by affordable prices, skilled practitioners, and the promise of fuller, more youthful lips (among other procedures). And while most go for subtle enhancements, the trend we’ve observed is that ultra-augmented lips have taken on a life of its own - so much so, that even the street art is speaking up!
The learning for us is finding acceptance where our thoughts are based only around “You make choices that make you happy.” It’s easier said than done so for now we keep our lips sealed.
